Speech is an amazing activity that will benefit you the rest of your life. Being in speech is both a team and individual activity. There are many different categories that people can be involved in. Each event will help you become more confident public speaker. Even if public speaking is not your thing, there are events that you might still enjoy!
Some perks of being on the WHS speech team include:
• Meeting many new people from your school, the state and nation
• Getting to travel to many different schools
• Being on a team, but not having to run :)
• Working with state and nationally recognized coaches
• Possibly traveling and competing at the state and national level
If you like theater and performing, there are events like prose, drama, extemporaneous reading, duo and poetry that use many of the same skills at theater. These events require you to take on different characters and perform pieces from books, plays, movies and poetry.
Interested in current events or like working with other people? You might have fun in categories like discussion or extemporaneous speaking. These events require very focused individuals who like to do research and keep up with what is going on in the world.
Enjoy speech class, creative writing or telling others about really cool things? There are many events that are geared for people with these interests. Informative, original oratory, creative expression and great speeches are all events that you might enjoy.
Are you goofy and very energetic? You might enjoy being in events like Humorous or Storytelling. These events are great for those not afraid to step outside of their comfort zone.
